Product description
Italian Midcentury Modern Mahogany and Rosewood Dining set, Osvaldo Borsani 1950 This exquisite Italian Midcentury Modern dining set, designed by Osvaldo Borsani for Atelier Borsani Varedo in the 1950s, is a stunning example of refined craftsmanship and sophisticated design. The set includes a beautifully shaped dining table and six matching chairs, each showcasing the impeccable attention to detail and elegant aesthetic that defined Borsani’s work. The dining table features a solid poplar wood structure, expertly veneered in luxurious rosewood, creating a rich and dynamic grain pattern. The surface is topped with a sleek black opaline glass panel, which is seamlessly nestled within the wooden frame, providing both visual contrast and a durable, easy-to-maintain finish. The table's base is adorned with delicate brass accents that highlight the refined mid-century design. The six accompanying chairs are crafted from solid mahogany, offering both durability and a warm, rich tone that complements the table's rosewood veneer. The gently curved frames enhance both aesthetics and comfort, while the seats are upholstered in original red faux leather, adding a bold yet elegant contrast to the dark wood. The brass detailing on the chairs subtly echoes the table’s decorative elements, ensuring a harmonious and cohesive look. The set has undergone a meticulous restoration process by our expert team. The solid mahogany chair frames have been fully restored and refinished, preserving their original beauty while ensuring structural integrity. The original red faux leather upholstery remains in remarkable condition, free from any cuts or damage. The brass elements on both the table and chairs have been polished to restore their original luster. The table’s wood structure has been carefully treated against woodworms, fully refinished while respecting the original design, and the black opaline glass top remains intact, with only minor signs of aging. With its impeccable craftsmanship, timeless mid-century design, and carefully executed restoration, this dining set represents a rare and valuable piece of Italian design history, offering both aesthetic beauty and functional elegance. Osvaldo Borsani (1911–1985) was one of the most influential Italian designers and architects of the 20th century, renowned for his innovative approach to furniture design and his seamless fusion of craftsmanship with modern industrial techniques. Born in Varedo, Italy, Borsani was deeply immersed in the world of design from an early age. His father, Gaetano Borsani, was a master cabinetmaker who founded Atelier Borsani Varedo, a prestigious furniture workshop known for its high-quality craftsmanship and custom-made pieces  (The workshop became known for its luxurious and elegant designs, blending neoclassical influences with modernist principles). The atelier gained recognition in the 1920s and 1930s for producing elegant, handcrafted furniture that combined traditional techniques with modern aesthetics. After studying architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, Osvaldo joined his family's company in the 1930s and played a crucial role in shifting its focus towards a more modern and functionalist design philosophy. His early works, while rooted in classic Italian craftsmanship, displayed a strong Art Deco influence, eventually transitioning into the sleek, rationalist designs that defined Italian mid-century modernism. In 1953, Osvaldo Borsani co-founded Tecno, a company that became a major player in the production of industrially manufactured modern furniture.  While Tecno became Borsani’s primary focus, his earlier works under Atelier Borsani Varedo remain highly sought after for their elegance, high-quality materials, and timeless craftsmanship. These pieces are now considered rare collector’s items, representing an important transition in Italian furniture design from traditional artisanal production to the sleek modernist aesthetics of the post-war era. Each order is carefully packed in a sturdy wooden crate or through private courier and shipped with full insurance coverage, ensuring up to a 100% immediate refund in the rare event of transport damage.
